One of the main reasons my husband and I launched Boardroom Events and moved aboard our sailboat was to escape New England’s frigid winters for location independence. At my core is an eternal curiosity, constantly yearning to meet new people and celebrate new experiences.
While I absolutely love living in the Florida Keys, an undeniable itch to travel again set in after seven years afloat. We spent years planning experiences to help other executives grow their businesses, so when the opportunity arose to let someone else manage logistics of traveling for work, I had to jump.
Last month in Spain, I celebrated my sixth month with Remote Year. The experiences I’ve had and the people I’ve met in such a short amount of time…life changing.
It’s an interesting collection of folks with whom I’m currently living and sharing a workspace. The current makeup of our group is about half software and application developers, a quarter writers and bloggers and the remaining 25 percent are sales people and entrepreneurs like myself.
When I left Miami last August, everyone was flooding me with advice about never being alone, always staying on high alert for dangerous people…I’ve found that fear is completely unwarranted. I’ve been amazed at how easy it is to find common ground, how similar we all are, no matter where we live.
As much as our team requires technology to do our jobs, it’s also screwed me up more often than it helped me! Live, human, face-to-face connections are too easily lost when you’re staring at your phone trying to use Google Translator.
In every country I’ve traveled so far, people are much more willing to help if they see you making a genuine effort. It is infinitely easier to communicate what you need from a stranger if you maintain eye contact.
It’s no different in business.
A slick automated marketing solution churning out emails with entry-level sales reps making cold calls can never equal that of a genuine, personal, face-to-face connection.
That’s precisely why Boardroom Events is building on our forum model for executives and solution providers to network. In the coming weeks, we’ll be hosting a couple of workshops in Boston and Atlanta about leveraging data for empowered decision making across the business.
